About Neckstrip

Neckstrip is an independent study site for people about to sit a state barber licensing exam: free practice questions and study pages built on NIC’s National Barber Theory outline and ranked by where the points are. It is not NIC, not a testing company, not a state board and not a school.

against the sources linked on this page.

Who this site is for

Neckstrip is written for one reader: someone in a barber program or an apprenticeship who has a written theory exam coming and not enough evenings to read a barbering textbook cover to cover twice. Every page answers the same question first: which topics carry the points on your exam, and which ones you can learn in an hour and leave.

Out of scope on purpose: cosmetology, instructor and shop-manager licenses, license renewals and school listings. If that is your question, your state board answers it better than any study site.

How the practice questions are built and checked

The practice questions start in the barber theory bank behind the iPhone app this site links to (661 questions in the Oct 15, 2026 snapshot). Nothing reaches a page without these steps:

  1. Map it to the outline

Each question is tagged to one of the four NIC domains and one of its sub-areas, using the Barber Theory bulletin effective June 1, 2025, revised Sept 1, 2025 (NIC candidate bulletin). Sets are mixed by domain weight, so Hair Care Services (40%) and Scientific Concepts (35%) get the most tickets.

  2. Cut anything state-specific

Questions about license rules, fines, training hours, or one exact disinfectant contact time or alcohol strength are dropped. Those numbers change by state, and a practice question that teaches the wrong state’s rule costs you a point.

  3. Rewrite it in our own words

Stems, options, the note under every option and the explanation are rewritten for this site. No NIC sample question and no bulletin text is copied.

  4. Check the key twice, blind

Two separate passes answer each question with the key hidden. In the first, 407 candidates were solved and only questions whose blind answer matched the key could be picked. In the second, a different reviewer answered all 100 published questions cold: 100 of 100 matched. A question that fails either pass is rewritten or dropped.

  5. Check the explanations against sources

Infection-control wording is read against CDC guidance (CDC disinfection guidance), the EPA list of registered disinfectants (EPA) and OSHA’s bloodborne pathogens standard. One explanation was corrected this way: OSHA still uses the term universal precautions.

  6. Remove the giveaways

In the 60-question set each letter, A to D, is the correct answer 15 times, and the correct answer is the longest option in only 5 of the 100 questions. Guessing “longest” or “always C” will not work here, and it will not work on exam day either.

Sources and dates

Every exam fact on Neckstrip links the document it came from: NIC’s candidate bulletins for the theory outline (NIC Barber Theory bulletin), NIC’s map of exam providers (nictesting.org/maps), and the board or vendor bulletin for each state fact. All of them were ; each page shows its own check date under the heading.

Where a source is old, blocked or contradicts another, the number stays off the page. That is why you will not find a national passing score, a national fee or a national hours figure here: your state sets all three.

If a page and your board disagree, your board is right. Tell us through the contact page and the page gets rechecked.

None of these organizations reviewed, approved or endorsed this site, and Neckstrip has no business relationship with any of them. Their names appear only to say which exam and which outline the practice material covers. No one can promise you a pass, and this site does not.

Why every page points to an iPhone app

The site is free because the app pays for it. The “Get the app” buttons go to an iPhone practice app built on the full bank the 100 questions here were drawn from, with an explanation for every answer. There is no Android version.

Each tap on that button passes through go.mybarberlicense.com, which logs the click. What it records is on the privacy page. If you would rather not tap it, the free practice test on this site needs nothing from you.

Questions people ask

Is Neckstrip connected to NIC, PSI or a state barber board?

No. Neckstrip is independent. NIC writes the national barber exams, PSI and Pearson VUE deliver exams for some states, and your state board issues the license. None of them reviewed or approved this site.

Are the questions on Neckstrip real barber exam questions?

No. They are practice questions written to the NIC barber theory outline and checked twice with the answer hidden. They teach the rules the exam tests; the exam itself words them differently.
